About This Event
Event Description:
What can bring together the irreverent satire of a comedian like Lenny Bruce, the father of stand-up comedy, with the way science proceeds? Much more than you might think!
“The truth is what it is, what should be is a dirty lie” said Bruce, while with sharp satire he proceeded to unmask the hypocrisies of the American society of the time, to try to demolish social conventions but also the so-called common sense.
Science – at least in some cases – could be said that does the same: it uses irony, ridicule, satire to clear the field from false or contradictory ideas and reveal “what is”, as well as to express in an apparently light and mocking way, profound concepts.
The truth, however, is often uncomfortable, and it is no coincidence that censorship lurks both for comedians and scientists who go “too far.”
In short, there are unexpected and unsuspected parallels between science and satire. The stand-up comedian, author and actor Giorgio Montanini will illustrate them, hoping to snatch a few laughs, with two Professors of the IMT School: Gabriele Costa Professor in Computer Science and Gustavo Cevolani Professor in Logic and Philosophy of Science.
