“Older and wiser? About (ab)normal cognitive aging”

Lezing “Older and wiser? About (ab)normal cognitive aging”. Our brains help us to interact with our surroundings and each other, by carefully registering the signals our senses pick up. Our inner thoughts help us structure and plan how we will act on the incoming information, whether we will be inclined to accept a kind invitation for a cup of coffee, or whether we will decline because there is still much work to do or because it is freezing outside. As we grow older, both the structure of the brain and the way it processes information changes. However, this does not mean the ageing brain is not able to process knowledge accurately any longer. In contrast, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease negatively impact a person’s ability to interact with others and to weigh the pros and cons of a decision. Functional and structural brain scans can help neuroscientists and clinicians understand what happens during normal ageing and neurodegeneration. This talk discusses what a healthy ageing brain looks and acts like, and contrasts this to how neurodegeneration can adversely affect the human brain.

Rose Bruffaerts, MD, PhD is a neurologist (University Hospitals Leuven & Leuven Brain Institute, Belgium) and assistant professor of Neurosciences (University of Hasselt, Belgium). She is also a (former) research associate of the University of Cambridge (UK) & the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Her research focuses on interindividual differences across the lifespan and in patients with neurodegeneration. She is an elected member of the Young Academy of Flanders and in this capacity, she advocates the broad dissemination of science and stakeholder involvement.

Lezing: “Ouder en wijzer?” Over (ab)normale cognitieve veroudering”. Dankzij onze hersenen kunnen we reageren op wat onze zintuigen waarnemen, en zo in interactie gaan met onze omgeving. De hersenen helpen ons deze zintuigelijke informatie te verwerken en beslissingen te nemen, bv of we ingaan op een aanbod om een kopje koffie te gaan drinken, of liever thuisblijven omdat het te druk is of omwille van de vriestemperaturen. Tijdens het verouderingsproces verandert de structuur van hersenen en ook de manier waarop ze informatie verwerken. Dat wil echter niet zeggen dat het verouderende brein niet meer correct functioneert, integendeel. Het verouderingsproces verschilt daarin sterk van wat er zich voordoet in de hersenen bij hersenaandoeningen, zoals de ziekte van Alzheimer. Hersenziektes verstoren de informatieverwerking in de hersenen en maken dat patiënten zich moeilijker kunnen uitdrukken of moeilijker beslissingen kunnen nemen. Scans die het uitzicht en de werking van de hersenen kunnen in beeld brengen, helpen neurowetenschappers en artsen te begrijpen wat er verandert tijdens gewone veroudering en bij hersenziektes. In deze voordracht komt aan bod hoe oudere hersenen eruitzien en werken, en hoe dit verschilt van de veranderingen die optreden bij hersenziektes.

Prof.Dr. Rose Bruffaerts is neuroloog in UZ Leuven en het Leuven Brain Institute en professor neurowetenschappen aan de UHasselt. Eerder was zij onderzoeker aan de Universiteit van Cambridge (VK) en het Massachusetts Institute of Technology (VS). Ze bestudeert verschillen in cognitie bij gezonde proefpersonen en patiënten met hersenziektes. Ze is lid van Jonge Academie en in die hoedanigheid zet ze zich in voor wetenschapscommunicatie en stakeholderparticipatie.
