To celebrate Brain Awareness Week 2021, Pietro Calissano, co-founder and former President of the European Brain Research Institute ‘Rita Levi-Montalcini’, will give a lecture on the life and scientific discovery of Rita Levi-Montalcini. This talk will trace the animal model research, which led to Levi-Montalcini’s important discovery, the Nerve Growth Factor (NGF); a discovery for which she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1986. It is not well known that in addition to chick embryos, which were mainly used for the identification of NGF, the scientist also used other species and animal models for her studies, such as snake venom, mouse salivary gland and cockroaches. Professor Calissano will highlight the various stages of Levi-Montalcini’s research, which led to the Nobel recognition, starting from her studies on the formation and growth of nerve fibres, first in Italy under the direction of Giuseppe Levi and later in the USA at Washington University in St. Louis where she remained for more than 18 years, conducting her studies with embryologist Viktor Hamburger. After her long stay in the USA, Levi-Montalcini returns to Italy and continues her studies on NGF at the Neurobiology Research Center of the National Research Council, where Calissano started working as a postgraduate student.

In occasione della Settimana del Cervello, Pietro Calissano, co-fondatore dell’EBRI insieme a Rita Levi-Montalcini e già Presidente EBRI, terrà un seminario nel quale riassumerà gli studi e le scoperte di Rita Levi-Montalcini seguendo le tracce dei modelli animali che condussero la scienziata ad una delle più importanti scoperte nel campo delle neuroscienze, tra cui NGF, il fattore di crescita nervoso, la scoperta che le valse il Premio Nobel per la Medicina nel 1986. Non tutti sanno che oltre agli embrioni di pollo, sui quali Rita Levi-Montalcini impiegò anni e anni delle sue ricerche su NGF, la scienziata impiegò differenti specie di sostanze e animali per i suoi studi, come il veleno dei serpenti, la ghiandola salivare dei topi e gli scarafaggi. In questo seminario Pietro Calissano racconterà inoltre le tappe che portarono la Professoressa al Nobel, partendo dai suoi studi sulla formazione e crescita delle fibre nervose prima in italia sotto la guida di Giuseppe Levi e poi negli Usa, alla Washington University di Saint Louis, dove Rita Levi-Montalcini si fermò per ben 18 anni, confrontando le sue ipotesi con l’embriologo Viktor Hamburger, fino al suo ritorno in Italia nel 1962 dove continuò a studiare il NGF nel Centro di Neurobiologia del CNR presso il quale Calissano iniziò a lavorare come dottorando.
