About This Event

Event Description:

Science and the arts come together in this pair of free events which explore the mysteries of how we dance. The Dance Theatre of Harlem and Columbia University’s Zuckerman Institute partner to bring you inside both the body and mind of a dancer. Enjoy a live dance performance and hands-on experiences, combined with insight from scientific experts about how the brain and body work together to produce the magic of ballet.

In the first event, a public demonstration and panel discussion on March 11, 2021, at 6:30 pm eastern, join us as internationally-renowned choreographer Darrell Grand Moultrie guides us through elements of dance performed live on screen. Neuroscientist Leslie Sibener will discuss with Mr. Moultrie how our brains produce and practice movements, and how movement in the face of challenges may serve as a therapeutic outlet. The discussion will be moderated by neuroscientist and dancer Neeli Mishra.

The Brain at the Barre: The Neuroscience of Ballet is brought to you in collaboration with the Dance Theatre of Harlem’s Thursdays @ DTH, and is supported by the Dana Foundation’s Brain Awareness Week Outreach Grants Program.
