….2022 is likely to bring a historic policy change with the potential to impact neurological services worldwide, as reported by a recent Lancet Neurology editorial (page 103 Vol 21, February 2022). In May, WHO is expected to adopt its Intersectoral Global Action Plan on epilepsy and other neurological disorders, with the aim “to improve care, recovery, well-being and participation of people living with neurological disorders across the life-course”. With this Global Action Plan, WHO considers neurological disorders, for the first time, as a distinct priority for global health, and the effects of this long-overdue decision should ripple across national health systems and research-funding agendas.
WHO Member States are expected to adopt the Global Action Plan-GAP at the 75th World Health Assembly. The adoption should not only place the prevention of neurological disorders as a key part of the EU implementation roadmap for tackling non-communicable diseases but also change research priorities and the public health strategic plan of the EU, which does not mention neurological health at present. The adoption of the WHO Plan is “a unique opportunity” to improve the lives of people with neurological disorders. 2022 will certainly be a momentous year for the neurological community, the year of neurology revolution!

The speaker will be Matilde Leonardi, Neurologist from Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Neurologico Besta and One Neurology Ambassador, with Introduction by the President of the Italian Society of Neurology Prof Alfredo Berardelli and by Prof Giuseppe Lauria, Scientific Director of Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Neurologico Besta.
