Event Description:
“Pearls of wisdom”, “a breath of fresh air”, “a shark of a lawyer”: why is it that when we speak we commonly use words to convey something beyond their literal dictionary definitions? And how do we manage to understand each other anyway? We will discuss how the human brain is able to solve metaphorical expressions, the fragility of this ability, and the brain’s plasticity.
VALENTINA BAMBINI
Full professor in Linguistics at the IUSS University School for Advanced Studies of Pavia. She specialises in neurolinguistics, language acquisition and disorders, with a special interest in figurative expression in communication. She is the coordinator of a European project on metaphors. She authored “Il cervello pragmatico” (Carocci, 2017) – “The Pragmatic Brain” – and co-curated the manual “Pragmatica Sperimentale” (Il Mulino, 2022) – “Experimental Pragmatics”.

Professoressa ordinaria di Linguistica presso la Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS di Pavia. Si occupa di neurolinguistica, di acquisizione e disturbi del linguaggio, con un interesse particolare per le espressioni figurate nella comunicazione. Coordina un progetto europeo sulla metafora. Ha pubblicato “Il cervello pragmatico” (Carocci, 2017) e ha co-curato il manuale “Pragmatica Sperimentale” (Il Mulino, 2022).
