Details of Major Brain Awareness Week Events/Activities:

The Brain Awareness Week (BAW) 2021 in the west region of Cameroon was celebrated from 16-19 March and was led by Prof Gwladys T. Ngoupaye, Prof Telesphore B. Nguelefack, and Dr. David Fotsing. The campaign objective was to impact people at different levels of the population in the west region about drug addiction. BAW was special despite the COVID-19 pandemic, as we managed with social distancing to cover primary school, secondary schools, and health training schools. The theme used was related to the theme chosen by CAMANE and was “The impact of addictive substances and its consequences in educative milieu” as this is still a real issue in Cameroon. The sensitization was done in Dschang and Bafoussam, two cities of the West region. We organized workshops, video projections, teaching, and quiz with rewards to the best. The workshop consisted of training students to simulate a community sensitization on addictive substances. The quiz was most of the time organized in a team of girls (ladies) vs. boys (men) to encourage girls to be proactive. Interestingly, in almost all the schools, the girls(ladies) were the winner. This was the particular note of this Brain Awareness Week 2021. We had good feedback as the students at a drop of a hat were giving a summary of our lectures and the school managers wanted us to come back. Also, Brain Awareness Week in Cameroon is becoming a national event as from the beginning it was only happening in Dschang (West region) with Prof Gwladys T. Ngoupaye from the University of Dschang leading the team – this year more universities were involved such as Buea, Maroua, Ngaoundéré, and Yaoundé. We look forward to having an impact in more cities in the west region and beyond.

Feedback & Keys to Success

How do you feel BAW participation benefited your organization and the local community?

More people are planning to be part of the 2022 campaign. we are planning to have a bigger impact at the university and to set a period where students will be present other than the formal Brain Awareness Week period, as the BAW campaign falls into the University of Dschang Break period.

Please share any suggestions or lessons learned that may help others plan future events:

We learned that: 1- The feedback is better when the students are involved in the teaching through activities that allow them to participate and having hands-on. 2- Prepare prizes as activating the reward system enhance the learning process.
