Details of Major Brain Awareness Week Events/Activities:
Conference: “Physical exercise and brain” Sergio Márquez Gamiño, M.D., M.Sc., Ph.D. talked about the importance of physical exercise in the brain functioning. The audience learned the differences between physical activity, physical exercise, and sports. The main effects reported are the improvement in attention, efficiency of cognitive functions, decreasing of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders manifestations in children. As well, evidences of reduction of labor responses to stress were presented. At the cellular level it was discussed effects on neuroplasticity and neurogenesis. In the elderly, we were told that exercise reduces memory loss, and risk of Alzheimer´s disease. In the “Motor Control Workshop” given by Liliana Águila M.D., and Pediatric Rehab Specialist, the participants experientially learned on the mechanisms of motor control of the human body. The interaction between the central nervous system, and the musculoskeletal system were shown through exercising posture control, spatial location and tactile differentiation of shapes and textures.
