Details of Major Brain Awareness Week Events/Activities:
On the 12th of March, we have organized the opening conference, with presentations regarding psycho-education, the structure and functions of the brain and the influence of stress on mental health. On the 13th of March, a session regarding the representation of psychiatric disorders in media was held. On the 14th of March, we held a workshop regarding the group psychotherapy and its importance in depressive disorders. In the afternoon, several presentations regarding dementia, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were held by adult psychiatrists. In the evening, we held a psycho-education group about the main symptoms and neurobiological bases of ADHD. On the 15th of March, we have organized a workshop regarding the psychotherapy management of anxiety disorders. On the 16th of March, in the morning, we went to a school, where we held presentations to two classes of children, aged 6 to 8, regarding the neurobiological bases of emotions. In the afternoon we had the closing conference with presentations regarding autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, substance abuse and epileptic manifestations in children and adolescents. During the whole week, an on-line questionnaire regarding burnout symptoms in medical proffesionals was available on-line. We are currently working on a paper based on these results. Moreover, we have conceived brochures with general information regarding the following disorders: ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, anxiety, depression, dementia, substance abuse bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The brochures issued from the program were largely distributed Through these activities, the project’s goal to increase awareness in our community regarding mental health disorders has been thoroughly met.

How do you feel BAW participation benefited your organization and the local community?
It increased the awareness regarding our institutions and the mental health care service that we provide and it helped our patients and their caregivers gain a better understanding regarding their or their family member’s mental health disorder. Moreover, it has contributed to an increment in the awareness of the students regarding mental health disorders. Another immediate outcome were the brochures that were created for the event, which have been distributed to patients an caregivers.
