Details of Major Brain Awareness Week Events/Activities:

The aim of our program this year was to students and the general public the opportunity to hear about the latest findings and exciting prospects in neuroscience research. Leading experts from the Czech Republic, who investigate brain activity, its treatment and functions, were able to pass on their knowledge to almost 2000 high school students and members of the general public. Among the major contributors to the lecture series was one of the Institute’s own, prof. MD. Eva Syková, MD., a leading expert in the field of stem cells, who spoke specifically about the use of stem cells in the treatment of brain diseases. Another expert, prof. MD. George Raboch, MD., from the Psychiatric Clinic, 1st Medical Faculty, Charles University, spoke on the topic: Mental disorders and society. Following his lecture, prof. MD. Josef Syka, MD., also from the IEM ASCR, led an exciting discussion on the topic of how our brain perceives sound. Prof. MD. Richard Rokyta, MD., President of the Czech Medical Academy, offered his professional insight into modern treatments of chronic pain, whilst prof. MD. Cyril Höschl, MD., from the National Institute of Mental Health, gave a lecture about the neurobiology of schizophrenia. Furthermore, a leading expert in the study of multiple sclerosis, prof. MD. Eva Havrdová, PhD. addressed in her lecture the theme of multiple sclerosis as a disease of civilization. In addition to this, other experts were also able to share new insight from their brain research.
