Details of Major Brain Awareness Week Events/Activities:
1)Lecture called “Understanding Your Brain” with guest speaker who provided information on anatomy/physiology of brain, cognition and behavior. the goal to educate on topic was met. Also had social reception following lecture with “brain healthy” food–very well received and enjoyed! 2)”Introduction to Mindfulness” session with meditation teacher. Some research and general information and informal discussion followed by practice session of meditation. Goal to educate and interest new members into regular weekly group, fair attendance but enjoyed! Did help promote the program in the community 3)”Brain Games” session of sampling of brain stimulating activities and games. Poorly attended by independent living residents, some attendance of assisted living residents as they came as part of a group activity. Uncertain if the disappointing turnout was related to the activity or was the time of day offered (late morning). 4)Lecture, “Taking Control: Brain Health” presented by a well known, respected, favorite clinician from our partnering primary care practice. Information presented on natural changes in an aging brain, tips on how to minimize impact of changes, especially gave details on nutrition, exercise, and stress relieving strategies with handouts. Very well attended and enjoyed. Met the goal of educating and motivating some healthy changes.
