Details of Major Brain Awareness Week Events/Activities:
This year, we celebrated 20th BRAIN AWARENESS WEEK in Eskisehir. We organized several BAW events for different age groups. We targeted children of the play age (ages 5-6), primary school students (ages 10-12), high school students (ages 14-18) and their teachers, medical students from different universities in Turkey and also general public. OUR OBJECTIVIES for BRAIN AWARENESS WEEK are: To motivate students to learn about the brain and even inspire some of them to launch a career in neuroscience. To educate the public about the importance of physical activity, mental exercise, right nutrition, sleep hygiene and social interaction to promote healthy brain aging and to improve life quality for the elderly. The BAW 2018 in Eskişehir-Turkey included six distinct projects: Lab Tours, Brain Bee, Symposium, Conferences, Epilepsy Congress, School Visits. This year, we organized 11th Turkish Brain Bee. This competition coordinated by Prof. Ferhan ESEN. Feedback & Keys to Success
How do you feel BAW participation benefited your organization and the local community?
We believe that the making organizations such as BAW are the responsibility of university, especially medical faculty, to the local community. It provides the general public not only to learn the importance of brain health but also advertise the university to community. Turkish National Brain Bee (TNBB) competition has been attracting the attention of local high school students since it was set out.
Please share any suggestions or lessons learned that may help others plan future events:
We may use the advantage of children alertness created by BAW to strengthen their interest to neuroscience. The interactive activities increased the interest of different populations to BAW activities. Lab tours attracted very much attention and all high school students were very glad. Thanking to medical students (BRAIN TEAM-2018) who are involved in these activities, and giving a certificate of attendance that are signed by the Rector of ESOGU and the Dean of Faculty of Medicine, have inspired other students to involve in these activities.
