Details of Major Brain Awareness Week Events/Activities:
This year, we celebrated the 21th BRAIN AWARENESS WEEK in Eskisehir. We organized several BAW events for different age groups. We targeted children of the play-age (ages 5-6), primary school students (ages 10-12), high school students (ages 14-18) and their teachers, medical students from different universities in Turkey and also the general public. We aim to promote public awareness about brain and brain health among children, youth, adults and the elderly living in the vicinity of Eskişehir in Turkey. The BAW 2019 in Eskişehir-Turkey included five distinct projects: Lab Tours, Brain Bee, Brain Awareness Symposium, Conferences, and Schools Visits. This year, we organized 12th Turkish Brain Bee. This competition was coordinated by Prof. Ferhan ESEN. Our BAW program started on March 5, 2019 with lab tours specifically organized for Turkish National Brain Bee competitors. We had 92 competitors from 31 different high schools in Eskişehir, Bilecik, Kütahya, Konya and Kocaeli. Dilan Zümre Aydemir from Eskişehir Fatih Anadolu High School won first place. School Programs: We visited of ESOGÜ Preschool, Bahçeşehir College Preschool, Bahçeşehir College Primary School and Middle School in Eskişehir. Turkish versions of “It’s Mindboggling!”, “More Mindbogglers!” and “Mindboggling Workbook” booklets were distributed to the students.

Feedback & Keys to Success
How do you feel BAW participation benefited your organization and the local community?
We believe promoting brain health and celebrating BAW is the responsibility of the academy. It is a good opportunity to get the general public and university together for the greater good of the society. Of course, the “Brain Bee” competition is an indispensable attraction for the high school students during a period when they set out their carrier. The public recognized the importance of preventive medicine on their health and the role of universities to educate them in this very important subject.
Please share any suggestions or lessons learned that may help others plan future events:
We may use the advantage of children’s alertness created by BAW to strengthen their interest in neuroscience. The interactive activities increased the interest of different populations to BAW activities. Lab tours attracted very much attention and all high school students were very glad. Thanking to medical students (BRAIN TEAM-2019) who are involved in these activities, and giving a certificate of attendance that are signed by the Rector of ESOGU and the Dean of Faculty of Medicine, have inspired other students to involve in these activities.
