Details of Major Brain Awareness Week Events/Activities:
The first thing we did was to have an Assistant Professor (Ms M. Margarity) from the University of Patras, Greece speak about the brain to 35 of our school’s students. Following that, we accepted taking part in the 20th April 2019 BAW event in Pyrgos, Ileias, Greece. The students had to read scientific material; produce a poster made of recyclable materials and seeds and prepare a presentation on memory and its functions. What we wanted our students to do was to: a) get involved with researching a scientific topic that was connected to the school curriculum, b) work as a team, c) coordinate themselves and work in different fields to achieve the end products, d) go through the procedure of collecting, assessing, organizing and using data to make their presentation and finally e) present their work in front of a big audience outside the school. We feel that the students achieved the goals we had set and managed to overcome both personal and team difficulties in a really positive way. They showed excellent group and organizational skills. We also found out that certain students had talents we had not the chance to know of before, e.g. excellent photography skills. If one takes into account the fact that they live in a small village having no prior knowledge or experience of any such thing/event before, the cooperation with their fellow students, their teachers and Ms Margarity from the University was exemplary. After the end of their presentation, students admitted that they had been exposed to a unique experience which they had totally enjoyed. That is, we think, the greatest proof of the success of the whole venture.

How do you feel BAW participation benefited your organization and the local community?
Students realized the importance of taking good care of the brain and doing their best to work towards that direction. They really learnt a lot and were sensitized on the memory issue as well.
