Details of Major Brain Awareness Week Events/Activities:

We celebrated International Brain Awareness Week with various arts activities and performances to remind our students that “Art is Smart.” Research is showing that, in school, participating in the arts can have a positive impact on students’ grades, social skills, reading, writing and math ability. Best of all, the arts can increase happiness and joy. Throughout the week, we had many activities before, during and after school. For instance, the art club helped students create a mural that everyone could be involved in. We had music and dance performances throughout the week and even a poetry slam. Ultimately, students had many chances to both create and appreciate art. Additionally, students from Loma Linda University’s School of Neurology made a visit to campus to provide our students with information about careers in neurology.

Feedback & Keys to Success

How do you feel BAW participation benefited your organization and the local community?

Our focus on the brain and art benefited our students by reminding them of the academic importance of art and arts integration. Student artists felt empowered to express and promote their art. The minds of students who do not see themselves as artists were opened to the many benefits of the arts. It was a truly joyful week.
