Details of Major Brain Awareness Week Events/Activities:

Our Intro to Neuroscience class is in its 2nd year. Students will share their knowledge and classroom experiences as a hallway exhibit at the end of the semester, to advocate for brain awareness and promote brain health. The objectives of the class were to build neuroscience vocabulary fluency, participate in a dissection lab, read about case studies, and allow student interests to guide topics for study and research. It is hoped that with increased awareness about the brain, students will cherish their gift and be ‘healthy brain ambassadors’ in their school and community. Goals for next year’s class are to be more interactive: interact with a neuroscientist; attend field trips; and, more hands-on activities.

Feedback & Keys to Success

How do you feel BAW participation benefited your organization and the local community?

The most immediate outcome of the event, both last year and this year is an increased interest in brain health, and an increased awareness of how the choices one makes affect the health of one’s brain. Students are empowered by their increased knowledge to make better choices. Some students have expressed an interest in neuroscience as a career.

Please share any suggestions or lessons learned that may help others plan future events:

There is so much to cover in a 6-month class! A goal for next year is to integrate project-based learning more effectively. It would be helpful to have a basic curriculum to help with pacing, for a semester class. Lessons learned? Students are very interested in the topic, motivated to learn, and excited about sharing what they have learned. This Intro to Neuroscience class is an excellent opportunity to practice literacy skills.
