Details of Major Brain Awareness Week Events/Activities:

Southern Illinois University (SIU) Carbondale’s Brain Awareness Events were held throughout the month of March. The event was organized by Jennica Young with the help of graduate students in the Cognitive Sciences Graduate Organization. To start off Brain Awareness month informational tables were set up to help inform university students of the events. A workshop on resilience and coping with stress was given by the Health and Wellness Center during the first week of March. Audreyana Jagger conducted an interactive outreach lecture to residents of the Prairie Living Assisted Living Center during the second week of March. During the third week of March, Dr. Jonathan Hammersley gave a lecture on substance use in college students. During the last week of March, students gathered for the Crash Reel Documentary, a TBI and extreme sports documentary, and panel discussion. Throughout the month the Cognitive Sciences Graduate Organization sold brain shirts to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association and 2019 Brain Awareness events. Additionally, there was a restaurant fundraiser to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association. A total of about 70 students, patients, caregivers, and faculty members attended SIU Carbondale’s Brain Awareness Events.
