Details of Major Brain Awareness Week Events/Activities:
Event 1: A series of public lectures on “The Healthy Aging Brain” was presented at the Center for Neuroscience.by four prominent UC Davis scientists: Dr. John Morrison on “Life and death of neurons in the aging brain”, Dr. Charan Ranganath on “How memory works and can you make it better”, Dr. Gregg Recanzone on “Age-related hearing deficits”, and Dr. Leah Krubitzer on “Brain changes within an across lifetimes”. Interactive booths with brain anatomy, visual illusions, and brain puzzles were set up in the lobby. Over 150 members of the general public participated. Event 2: Groups of graduate students and postdocs visited two local elementary schools and one local high schools to teach the students about the brain and the excitement of brain research. Presentations included a display of comparative animal brains, what is a neuron, visual and auditory illusions, neurological diseases, and neuroscience in pop culture. We estimate that around 225 students participated. Event 3: A third planned activity – an interactive booth at the local Farmer’s Market aimed to teach young children about the brain was CANCELLED due to rain.
