Details of Major Brain Awareness Week Events/Activities:

We organized two school visits to grade 5 classrooms, which was a partnership with Let's Talk Science Outreach and the Faculty of Science. There were 4 different activity stations relating to neuroscience that undergraduate students developed and delivered. The Department of Biological Sciences also held an evening event for the general public featuring information on neuroscience research happening in their department, an art exhibit related to neuroscience, and trivia games.

Event Planning & Publicity

Publicity Methods Used:

  • Emails
  • Posters/Flyers
  • Social Media

Which of These Publicity Methods Was The Most Successful?

For classroom visits, emails directly to the teachers worked best, because those teachers were already participating in other outreach programs I coordinate. For the evening event, social media seemed to work best to reach people off-campus.

Feedback & Keys to Success

How do you feel BAW participation benefited your organization and the local community?

BAW is a great way to reach out to the public and make them more aware of the neuroscience research happening on our campus. For the classroom visits, it was a way to support teachers in delivering engaging science activities. We tied the workshop to the grade 5 curriculum, which has a unit on human body systems.
