Details of Major Brain Awareness Week Events/Activities:
Brain Awareness Week Report: Weber State University 2017 The Neuroscience Program at Weber State University (located in Ogden, Utah) organized local area outreach events for Brain Awareness Week March 6 – 10, 2017. The goal of the outreach program was to promote “scientific learning and understanding” of the brain and the impact of things like drugs and risky activities on the brain. This year’s lessons included information relating to brain physiology, anatomy, and function, as well as sensation and perception, neural plasticity, the dangers of drug abuse, and the importance of protecting the brain against traumatic brain injury (TBI). Hands-on activities this year included volunteer-guided sheep brain dissection and display, the use of beer- and concussion-goggles, tuning forks, reflex hammers, head massagers, and volunteer-guided question-and-answer sessions in which prizes were given away. These activities helped to promote understanding of the material being covered while also demonstrating the “real-life” impact of alcohol and TBIs may affect balance, vision, responsiveness, and so forth.
